We specialize in small lots of hand crafted wines from several different appellations in California. We search out those special vineyard sites that have the terroir and climate to express intense varietal character and purity. All our wines are aged in French oak from Francois Frères and Taransaud cooperages.
Call it small-town terroir: Growing up in the Napa Valley in the 1970s, Chris Stanton would ride his bicycle from vineyard to vineyard picking grapes for pocket money and getting to the know the vintners and growers. The valley was much smaller back then, says Chris , Just families and handcrafted wines. Their spirit and that early sense of community really shaped my career.
It&rsquos a distinguished career that spans 30 years and every corner of California&rsquos best wine regions, a passionate style of wine making that favors art over science, palate and instinct over chemistry, families over corporations and hand-craftsmanship over mass production. The result? Numerous exquisite wines, high praise and stellar ratings.
Sobriquet is a culmination and celebration of Chris&rsquo artisan style, an evocative collection of luxury wines handcrafted from California&rsquos best grapes and best appellations. Chris&rsquo bicycle is now a truck, but he still makes the rounds, knows all the vintners and growers, and hand-selects the grapes. &ldquoWith all my wines, I strive for intense varietal character&rsquo&rdquo Chris says. &ldquoWith Sobriquet, I&rsquom striving for the best of California.&rdquo
From vine to crush to cooperage, Chris has extensive experience in every aspect of the winemaking process. After receiving his degree in viticulture from UC Davis, he worked at St. Clement in St. Helena, Guenoc in Lake County, Mayo Family Winery in Glen Ellen, Koehler in Los Olivos, and is presently the winemaker at Blackjack Ranch Vineyards in Solvang. His wines have received high praise from Robert Parker&rsquos The Wine Advocate, and Wine Enthusiast, and have earned numerous 93, 92, 91 and 90 point ratings.
